The Wallawwa, Colombo

The last leg of our Sri Lankan whirlwind tour was spent in Colombo at The Wallawwa. A mere 15 minutes from Colombo airport this is a great place to start or finish your stay. This is not however, your typical airport hotel. I did not hear or see a plane whilst I was there and this is certainly not a high rise, concrete, characterless monstrosity you would normally associate with a hotel in such close proximity to an airport. In fact it is quite the opposite and you could quite easily while away a few very pleasant days here.

The hotel is set in a converted colonial mansion in the most beautiful tropical garden.

We loved the contrast of the red umbrellas, tropical planting, white colonial architecture, open-structured roofs and grey and white striped interiors. So simple and yet so chic.

We stayed in a garden suite which was much bigger than we imagined. (It even came complete with a hummingbird nest in the private garden, which made my day!)

If I had stayed longer I definitely would have made use of the Zen Spa.

And the pool is pretty spectacular as well….

The pool tiles alone are pure perfection!

Even if you’re not staying, I would recommend coming here for drinks and a meal as it is so peaceful (but not deserted) and the food is very good.

At night the hotel transforms into a stunningly romantic backdrop with the most amazing lighting which compliments the garden & building so thoughtfully. It really is wonderful to see.

There is also a really cute boutique which my hubby had to drag me away from, as I was in danger of coming home with 20 doorstops…

…how fun though, right?!
